Who Curates This Observatory

We started as canine professionals, but we approach the wonderful world of the Poodle on tiptoe. We consider this portal as our public notebook: a place to put our technical experience at the service of this breed, with a continuous desire to learn, exchange views, and provide accurate dissemination.

To ensure maximum technical and regulatory rigor, the contents are curated by Bianca Madalina Crismaru and Federico Fantacone, registered in the national registries of ENCI Cynological Trainers (Section 1) and ENCI Cynological Handlers. Both are members of the Kennel Club Roma and have completed the training program for Companion Animal Operators provided by ABIVET in accordance with Ministerial Decree dated September 6, 2023.
Bianca completed the Master Cynological Breeder program organized by AMVI and ENCI to provide breeders with the necessary skills to manage breeding with maximum respect for animal welfare and reproductive and genetic health.

Is the "Teacup" or "Micro Toy" Poodle an official breed?
Absolutely not. Official registries (such as FCI) exclusively recognize 4 sizes: Standard, Medium, Miniature, and Toy. The minimum height for the Toy standard is 24 cm at the withers (with a tolerance down to 23 cm). Terms like "Teacup" or "Micro" are commercial scams used to sell puppies suffering from pituitary dwarfism or severe malnutrition.
What is the actual difference between a Miniature and a Toy Poodle?
The difference is purely a matter of centimeters. The Miniature measures from 28 cm to 35 cm at the withers. The Toy measures from 24 cm to 28 cm. The breed standard specifies that the Toy must maintain the exact proportions of the Miniature without showing any signs of dwarfism (such as bulging eyes or an apple-shaped skull).
Does the Poodle shed, and is it truly hypoallergenic?
The Poodle does not have an undercoat and does not shed seasonal hair. Its coat grows continuously. It is considered hypoallergenic because it releases a minimal amount of dander (the primary cause of human allergies). However, it requires frequent grooming to avoid painful mats close to the skin.
How much does grooming typically cost?
Coat maintenance is a fixed cost. A professional grooming session with a scissor cut costs between €40 and €70 and should be done every 4-6 weeks, in addition to purchasing brushes and slickers for daily home care.
Do they frequently suffer from separation anxiety?
Yes. As dogs bred to live in close contact with humans, they have a strong attachment instinct. If they are not gradually and positively accustomed to being alone from their first months (the imprinting stage), they can develop separation anxiety, leading to destructive behavior or continuous barking.
Is the Toy Poodle suitable for families with small children?
Generally, the Toy size is not recommended for families with preschool-aged children. Their delicate bone structure makes them vulnerable to fractures caused by accidental drops or rough handling. For children, the Miniature or Medium size is much sturdier and more suitable.
How can red tear stains under the eyes (Epiphora) be prevented?
The discoloration is caused by porphyrins in the tears that oxidize light-colored fur. To counter it, you need to wipe the eyes daily, trim the hairs near the tear duct, and consider a limited-ingredient, grain-free diet to reduce inflammation.
